Hello and welcome to a new year at The Edge Academy!
This year is beginning with a new process called The Leader in Me. The Leader in Me is a process for teaching students personal leadership and 21st century life skills, such as goal setting, time management, teamwork, problem solving, respecting diversity , and life balance. The process:
- Develops the “whole child” and sees each child as having unique gifts
- Is founded on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and other proven leadership principles and tools
- Creates a sustainable, safe-and-friendly school culture
- Provides world-class professional development for teachers and administrators
- Increases parents’ satisfaction and involvement
- Is implemented in a way that teachers do not see it as “one more thing,” but as a better way of doing what they were already doing
- Impacts students of diverse backgrounds, regardless of race, intelligence, or economic upbringing.
We are promoting Habit 1 with the “proactive” way of thinking rather than “reactive” way. We are also centering on “Beginning with the end in mind” which will help the students make goals and strive to meet them. The 3rd Habit teaches us to “Put first things first” which emphasizes placing priority on our work. Habit 4 promotes the “Think Win-Win” with helping us when working with others and their feelings. Habit 5 focuses on “Seeking first to understand, then to be understood”. It’s important to remember to listen first before responding. Habit 6 teaches the principle of “Synergize” and how we can work together in cooperation. “Sharpening the saw” is what Habit 7 represents with ways to renew our bodies, minds, hearts and souls in order to be more effective. The students have done an excellent job at learning the habits, now we will focus on living the habits so that our words and actions match the habits. Learning about earthquakes |

The fourth grade has been learning about earthquakes. How, why, and where earthquakes occur have been discussed. In these photos the students were making “earthquake proof” structures. The structures were made out of toothpicks and marshmallows and the “ground” was made of Jell-O. |
To help promote and celebrate Earth Day 2010, the students at the Edge Academy helped recreate and beautify two of the flowerbeds on the south side of the building. In order to do this, the 5th & 6th grades paired up and each helped plant geraniums! Not only does this help our planet for cleaner air, but it helps beautify the school. Each time the kids are at recess, they are able to enjoy the hard work of the 5th & 6th graders! Thank you for helping keep our planet safe & healthy! |

Learning fun with Jeopardy |

Grades 1-3 recently participated in the first annual "Edge Jeopardy Game".
Four students from each grade were placed on the green, yellow, blue or red team. The students chose questions from various categories, including Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading or a random question from the Grab Bag. These questions were based on state standards. The easiest questions were worth 10 points and the hardest were 100 points. In order to answer a question, the students pressed the switch on a lamp.
The scores were tallied. The green team is in the lead. In May, grades 4-6 will have their Jeopardy game and their team scores will be added to the primary grades scores. The winning team will be receiving a special treat. The students were excited and everyone had a great time!

In 3rd grade science, our students have learned about fossils and how they are formed.
In lab, we made fossil molds. We placed joint compound on Styrofoam plates and spread it out flat. The students placed sea shells, model bones, leaf and animal print casts into the compound. Carefully we pulled out the objects and the imprints were left behind. Once the compound was dry, the students painted their molds and used glitter to emphasize the fossil imprints. |
